***** of Five just because I love it that much.
Well, I know this movie came out last year,
but I just watched it with my friend Justin
who hadn't seen it yet. This movie is based
on the cancelled TV show "Firefly" and is
actually, awesome. A completely fun movie,
it has all the best qualities a science fiction
movie can have....plus it's also kinda mixed
with a western kinda style that I normally
do NOT like, but somehow they've made it cool.
So best qualities for a s.f. movie:
-being realistic (as my friend Justin pointed
out, the ship makes sound when it's in an
atmosphere, but while it's in space it's totally silent.)
-lots of spaceship lingo
-cool gadgets and gizmo's
-a terrible secret the universe needs discovered
-exotic(not just sexy, but cool) women (in the
same way as female vulcans on star trek are 'exotic')
-futuristic cities
-fantastically cool villian
hmmm...that's all I can think of for now, but
if I think of more I shall certainly add them on.
The thing is, this movie has all those cool things
plus a unique style of it's own. One thing my
sister mentioned when she first saw it, was that
it wasn't a sci-fi movie for dummies. They didn't
over explain everything and why it was
that way in the future, they just kinda let you
imagine it for yourself. Create your own reasons.
(That being said, the director/creator commentary
is still super interesting.) One of my favorite things
that I did not realize on my own is the fact that in
the future, it's all chinese and american. Everyone
speaks both chinese and english, they dress with
both styles, the decorate with both, meditate with
both--pretty much everything that you see is blended
together. And on the commentary he(Joss Whedon)
helps us to understand that the point of this is that
instead of the "American Empire" of today just failing,
it would join up with the other current 'superpower'
of the world (which he currently views as China)and they
would together form this kind of utopian society. I just
think it is such a great fictional idea. What fun to
be able to create(albeit in movie form)what you
imagine! But that I had such an imagination! Anyhow,
my favorite things in this movie serenity:
-Definately the sarcasm. Probably my fav. thing period.
-The casting is perfect. They used all the original
actors from the tv show and you gotta appreciate that.
-The way everyone has learned chinese and intersperses
it within english, especially when emotions run high.
-Their language in general. I found it so intriguing the
first time i saw it, and still do. It's kind of like they are
speaking in the 1800's or something. Instead of today's
bumbling english, it's more formal or something. I am
totally open to anyone's better description.
(Please leave one if you have seen the movie. )
-I have to admit, I LOVE the ship. I would pay money
to have a little 'cruise' on serenity. They have done an absolutely
amazing job of making it look 100% real and so I want to go.
-Another thing I absolutely love is the music. What a
fantastic score for this kind of movie. Just one more thing
to make in way more original that the normal classical-
space-moviescore (this is also taken from the tv show).
Well this list could go on and on forever, so I'll stop. But the
best thing is once you have seen the movies you will want
more...and you can have it! In the DVD (Tv Show) set. The
movie is a whole different story, but it is exactly like the show.
So if you have seen the show, you won't be disappointed with
how they put the movie together and if you have only seen
the movie, you won't be disappointed with the show, it is
as good as the movie, but you will have like 14 hours or so
to fall in love with the world of Firefly and it's crew. Plus
wonderful outtakes, deleted scenes and commentaries with
the director and great ones with various members of the cast.
So after all that, who should watch this movie? Okay, so I want
to say everyone, but then I will hate the people who don't like
it, so if I'm going to be picky that way, I should be picky with
my recommendations, I guess. Here it is:
-You need to 'get'/understand sarcasm.
-You have to like when a cast and crew puts tons of
work into the smaller details of set and characters.
-I think it is pretty obvious, but you do have to like
scil-fi at least a little bit. If you don't you still might
like it, but you might find it a little boring, or common.
-You have got to have a good sense of humour.
-You should be alright with a little violence and a
touch of goriness.
-I don' t think there is any english swearing, but if you
know chinese and are offended by chinese obscenities,
bring some earplugs.(Oh, and there might be a small
bit of nudity, I can't quite remember, because I just
don't care that much, unless you are under 14).
-You probably should be at least 14 or 15 to watch it.
I think that should do it. Enjoy. I sure did..... do.
