**** of five and a pleasant surprise
Ok go see this movie and you'll understand
why I am addicted to movies. And it helps to
restore my faith in Canadian movies. An
interesting story about a 20 something guy who
grew up learning woodworking with his hippie
parents in the Kootenays. As my sister also
said, "boy it made me want to go on a canoe
trip.". The scenery is great, not to mention the
acting, the writing and the filming. It is nice to
take in a movie that keeps your attention
without explosions, some amazing unrealistic
plot(even the true ones) or a soul-mates tale.
But one that is an everyman's story, of a
person who is happy with their life, just....
wonders a little more. It has some romance,
a career aspect, a normal(ish!) family and a
problem to deal with, but one that people can
actually relate to. You know, just real.
And boy are there some good 'rants'.
Check out the way he lays into a hippie offering
him carob. And also confronting his dad. One
other part I liked that they threw in was one
where he ended up sleeping with someone
he didn't really want to, and when he left
in the morning, put some wildflowers by
her bed, then came took them back and threw
them in the bush as he walked away. It was
a nice little bit of self accountability put in.
I will definately be keeping an eye out for the
next work of Aubrey Nealon, the writer/director.
I will be recommending this movie only to
people who I think will like it. People who
will appreciate it. People who:
-Enjoy slow/mellow movies.
-Like woodworking.
-Have close friends or families who are
kinda hippies.
-Get frusterated with their hippie family/friends.
-Oh fine, and people who want to support
canadian film(I don't entirely hate it).
